Plantain & Sweet Potato Chips from Ghana - Vegan, Gluten-Free, Pack of 3

Four Ghanaian chips in one listing: three made from plantain — Sweet Plantain, Kelewele Krunch and Original Salted — and one made from sweet potato. Every flavor is cooked in Ghana and sold as a Pack of 3 sealed bags rather than one large bag, so the second and third stay crisp long after you open the first.

Kelewele Krunch is named after a real dish, and it is worth knowing what that dish is before you choose it. Kelewele is Ghanaian street food: cubes of ripe plantain marinated in ginger and chili pepper and fried until the edges caramelize, sold in the evening by night-market vendors, at lorry stations and outside chop bars, and most strongly associated with Accra. The name is usually traced to the Ga language, from words meaning roughly to cut small and to fry. Our chip version is built from the marinade ingredients themselves — ripe plantain, chili pepper, ginger, garlic and cloves — instead of a seasoning powder made to imitate them, and the heat is warm and aromatic rather than punishing.

Sweet Plantain and Original Salted are descriptive names rather than dish names, and both carry the same two-word ingredient list: plantain and salt. Sweet Plantain is cut from riper fruit, so its sweetness is the plantain's own and the nutrition panel shows no added sugars — there is no sugar dusting on these. Original Salted is the plain, everyday version eaten across Ghana by the handful, salted firmly enough that the salt actually registers against the starch. Sweet Potato is the outlier: sweet potato and salt only, sliced from the root rather than the fruit, denser and slower-sweet, and packed in 70g bags rather than 75g.

All four flavors are vegan and gluten-free, and all are made in a facility that also processes nuts. Eat them straight from the bag, put a bowl out with drinks, or serve them alongside roasted groundnuts the way fried plantain is traditionally eaten in Ghana.
